Food: Four Popular Bukkas in Lagos

Local resturants popularly unknown as "Bukka" is considered unsafe for few while some takes pleasure patronizing them. Maybe because it is affordable and offers quality local meals and it's easy to find one around. They are usually small or fairly sized rooms with wooden or plastic tables and chairs, with the cooking pots in view, in most cases. Eating out in bukkas is a very major part of Nigerian life, at least 70 percent of Nigerians have eaten in a bukka and a very good number visit frequently.

Bukka, which is also known as "Mama Put" is Nigeria’s version of street food. Food is a major part of tourism and bukkas are a good way to experience the local and authentic food culture of Nigerians.

Bukkas are on almost every corner of Lagos. Here is a list of four safe and popular ones in Lagos.


Amala Shitta

Location: 26 Rabiatu Thomson Crescent, Shitta, Surulere, Lagos.

Amala Shitta has been named the best place to get amala in Lagos. They serve amala and all its accompanying soups ewedu, gbegiri and obe elepo. Amala is a very popular dish in southwestern Nigeria and a lot of people are obsessed with this dish. This bukka usually has hundreds of people trooping in daily from all parts of Lagos to savour this meal that is so adored.

Olaiya

Location: 109 Akerele Road, Shitta, Surulere, Lagos.

Olaiya is another bukka that is famous for its amala as well as white rice and pepper stew in Surulere. Olaiya is run by a family and in a decent space that is surprisingly air-conditioned, an upgrade from all the regular bukkas.

White House

Location: 9 Chapel Street Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

White House is amongst the top three bukkas in Lagos and is very popular for its extensive menu compared to most of the others that have just one signature dish. They serve a variety of Nigerian dishes from rice to eba and amala, moin-moin and several soups. Their meals are affordable. White House caters to the tech, working class and student community in Yaba as there are two major tertiary institutions in Yaba. People also come from various parts of Lagos daily to eat at White House.

Ghana High

Location: King George V, off Awolowo Road, Lagos Island, Lagos.

Ghana High is a long-standing bukka in Lagos and is known for catering to the business hub on Lagos Island. Ghana High does not serve ‘swallow and soup’ meals; only rice, beans, plantain and stew varieties or combos. They are famous as one of the best places to eat ewa-agoyin, a spicy mashed beans meal, in Lagos.
