Apple Acquires Shazam

Apple announced yesterday that they have acquired Shazam. Shazam is a software that allows its users to identify music, movies and TV shows by playing audio clips.

According to Apple “We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple. Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS. Today, it’s used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms. Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement.”

Although Apple did not disclose the cost, sources say it was within the range of $400 million.

Chinese man arrested over US cyber attacks

  Photo credits: REUTERS  A Chinese man has been arrested in the US for allegedly selling malware used to hack into American companies. US authorities claim in court papers that Yu Pingan bought and sold malicious software including the rarely used Sakula program. That malware has been implicated in the 2014 hack attack on the US federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Information on a huge number of US workers employed in sensitive or secret work was stolen in that data breach. Software bugs Mr Yu was arrested earlier this week soon after he disembarked from a flight that landed at Los Angeles international airport. He has been charged with breaching computer networks owned by several US firms. Legal papers filed to support the arrest do not explicitly mention the OPM as one of the targets of the suspected attacks. Nokia Aim to Integrate CEM Technology For MTN Nigeria

Phot credits: AFP Nokia  has confirmed it will integrate its Customer Experience Management (CEM) software at MTN Nigeria. Naveed Kashif, Nokia’s Account Leader for MTN Group, said, “MTN recognises the growing importance of customer experience management as it seeks to differentiate itself and provide the best possible services to subscribers.” In its quarterly update for the period ended 30 September 2017, MTN recorded a drop in the number of subscribers in markets including South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as an overall decrease of 0.7%. The telco also announced organic revenue increases in key markets in Africa. MTN Nigeria reported an 11,2% increase in total revenue supported by data revenue growth of 72,1%, but conceded that digital revenue growth has been negatively impacted by the ongoing optimisation of VAS services. Many parts of Switzerland, two thirds of which is mountainous, are at risk of avalanches and landslides. Communities in the Alps have been protecting themselves against such natural hazards for years. Samsung Electronics' record-breaking earnings

The firm said huge sales of its new Galaxy S8 smartphone and demand for its memory chips were behind the jump in April-June and predicted another blockbuster report for the current quarter to September. Operating profit soared a forecast-beating 72.9 percent from the previous year to 14.07 trillion won ($12.6 billion), compared with consensus forecasts of $10.6 billion for US titan Apple, which is due to report next week. Thomas Cook relaunch flights to Tunisia - two years after beach terror attack

Flight and holiday packages to the north African destination were then suspended due to the incidence, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advising only essential travel to the region. However, Thomas Cook is one of the first providers to reintroduce flights to Tunisia, two years after the attack took place. It is hoped that British tourists will once again travel to the once popular destination. Thomas Cook is to restart the flights on February 13 and have gone on sale today.   Alibaba, Chinese e-commerce giant, is hosting Suvenia.com alongside three other Nigerian entrepreneurs are currently taking part in the first Alibaba eFounders Initiative Entrepreneurship Training Programme, titled Shaping Champions for the New Economy, hosted in the city of Hangzhou, China. Alibaba was founded by Jack Ma in 1999 and has grown to become one of the largest e-commerce conglomerates that provides consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales services via web portals. The pilot eFounders Initiative Entrepreneurship Training Programme runs from 10 to 23 November 2017.
