Storm Harvey: Coast Guard urges people not to tweet for help

 The US Coast Guard is asking people not to seek help via social media if they need assistance during Storm Harvey.

It is urging them to "keep trying" the emergency phone numbers instead, although some have pointed out that mobile phone batteries are running low.

One expert said it could be because social media posts can be hard to verify.

Many people are tweeting their addresses and asking to be rescued.

However it is possible that not all the requests will be spotted - and they may not all be genuine.

"The web is messy and unpredictable," said Euan Semple, who advises on the impact of social media on businesses and society.

"You have to be able to judge signal from noise."

Mr Semple added that persuading people to follow the Coast Guard's advice would be challenging.

"If you're in an extreme situation, and you can't get access through formal channels, and there is the prospect of help from somewhere else helping your signal to be seen, it would be tough not to."

Residents of a care home were rescued after an image of them waist-deep in floodwater went viral on Twitter.

Facebook has activated its safety check-in in Texas so that affected members can mark themselves safe.

Etihad, Alibaba, Ant partner on customer experience

Glitter iPhone cases recalled over chemical burn risk

Smartphone case maker MixBin says it is recalling several versions of its liquid glitter iPhone cases because users face the risk of skin irritation or chemical burns. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission , the recall impacts more than 263,000 cases sold in the U.S. for the iPhone 6, 6S and 7. The cases were sold directly by MixBin and through third-party retailers including Amazon, Nordstrom Rack and Victoria's Secret. MixBin says if the case breaks and the liquid comes in contact with the user's skin, it can cause irritations and even chemical burn. CPSC says there have been 24 reports of injuries tied to the cases, including one consumer who said they were permanently scarred from a chemical burn. MixBin is offering refunds to affected case owners, which can be requested through a special recall website. Users must provide a picture of the case when they register for the refund.

Naveed Kashif, Nokia’s Account Leader for MTN Group, said, “MTN recognises the growing importance of customer experience management as it seeks to differentiate itself and provide the best possible services to subscribers.” In its quarterly update for the period ended 30 September 2017, MTN recorded a drop in the number of subscribers in markets including South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as an overall decrease of 0.7%. The telco also announced organic revenue increases in key markets in Africa. MTN Nigeria reported an 11,2% increase in total revenue supported by data revenue growth of 72,1%, but conceded that digital revenue growth has been negatively impacted by the ongoing optimisation of VAS services. The firm said huge sales of its new Galaxy S8 smartphone and demand for its memory chips were behind the jump in April-June and predicted another blockbuster report for the current quarter to September. Operating profit soared a forecast-beating 72.9 percent from the previous year to 14.07 trillion won ($12.6 billion), compared with consensus forecasts of $10.6 billion for US titan Apple, which is due to report next week.
