Fake WhatsApp downloaded more than a million times

The app, "Update WhatsApp Messenger", appeared to have been developed by the firm behind the real program - WhatsApp Inc.

According to users on web forum Reddit, the fake contained ads and could download software to users' devices.

It has now been removed from the Play Store.

Whoever was behind the app managed to make it look as though its developer was "WhatsApp Inc".

They did this by using that exact name, though replacing the space with a special character that looks like a space.

The subtle difference would have been practically undetectable to the average user.

Users receiving automatic updates via the real WhatsApp would not have been affected.

It is far from the first time that Google has had to clean up fake malicious apps on the Play Store.

Apple’s App Store: Dating app Tinder finds gold

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it has intensified its onslaught against the threat posed by cybercriminals across the country. It said one of its strategies was the composition of the Industry Working Group (IWG) which brainstorms on ways to wage the war. Engr. Ubale Maska, executive commissioner, Technical Services, NCC, who spoke during the second Workshop of IWG on electronic banking fraud at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Kano, lamented the staggering level of fraud in the industry. Chinese man arrested over US cyber attacks

US authorities claim in court papers that Yu Pingan bought and sold malicious software including the rarely used Sakula program. That malware has been implicated in the 2014 hack attack on the US federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Information on a huge number of US workers employed in sensitive or secret work was stolen in that data breach. Software bugs Mr Yu was arrested earlier this week soon after he disembarked from a flight that landed at Los Angeles international airport. He has been charged with breaching computer networks owned by several US firms. Amazon revamps Echo smart speaker family

  Amazon has announced new versions of its Echo smart speakers that promise improved sound and voice recognition. The basic model also allows its shell to be changed to give it different looks - a feature already offered by Google's rival Home device. A larger Echo Plus adds a "home hub", letting it control smart light bulbs and other third-party products without a separate data-linking device. And the Echo Spot has a screen, making video calls and camera feeds possible. Amazon has never released sales figures for the earlier Echo line-up.
