Apple’s App Store: Dating app Tinder finds gold

Tinder for the first time became the top-grossing app in Apple’s online shop, topping the likes of Netflix, Pandora and hit mobile games like “Clash Royale.” Tinder, which made its debut five years ago, lets people swipe left or right on profiles to indicate those that they like as possible date partners. The dating application’s ascension to the top came quickly after it announced this week the worldwide roll-out of a new “Gold” service with features including the ability of subscribers to see who out there has “liked” them. Hurricane Irma: Storm hits west coast of Florida

More than 3.4 million homes in the state are without power, with parts of the city of Miami are under water. Three storm-related deaths have been reported and several areas have brought in curfews. Irma cut a devastating track across 10 Caribbean countries and territories, killing at least 28 people there. President Donald Trump has approved a major disaster declaration and emergency federal aid for Florida, describing the hurricane as a "big monster". At 06:00 GMT, the centre of the hurricane was about 25 miles (40km) north-east of Tampa, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Some 3m people live in the Tampa Bay area. NCC takes up arms against cyber rogues

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it has intensified its onslaught against the threat posed by cybercriminals across the country. It said one of its strategies was the composition of the Industry Working Group (IWG) which brainstorms on ways to wage the war. Engr. Ubale Maska, executive commissioner, Technical Services, NCC, who spoke during the second Workshop of IWG on electronic banking fraud at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Kano, lamented the staggering level of fraud in the industry. During his presentation titled: Electronic Banking Fraud in Nigeria: Challenges and Way Forward”, a Deputy Director at the NCC, Engr. Bako Wakil, said it became necessary to intensify the campaign following the visit by the Deputy Governor of the CBN to management of the NCC to discuss the prevalence of banking fraud using telecoms infrastructure. Chinese man arrested over US cyber attacks

US authorities claim in court papers that Yu Pingan bought and sold malicious software including the rarely used Sakula program. That malware has been implicated in the 2014 hack attack on the US federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Information on a huge number of US workers employed in sensitive or secret work was stolen in that data breach. Software bugs Mr Yu was arrested earlier this week soon after he disembarked from a flight that landed at Los Angeles international airport. He has been charged with breaching computer networks owned by several US firms. Legal papers filed to support the arrest do not explicitly mention the OPM as one of the targets of the suspected attacks.
