Bloomberg News reported on Saturday that Qualcomm had filed a lawsuit in Beijing seeking a ban on the assembly and sale of iPhones in China — a vital Apple manufacturing base and sales market. The two California companies are fighting over Apple’s claims that Qualcomm is abusing its market power over certain mobile chipsets in order to demand unfair royalties. Apple filed a US lawsuit to that effect in January and has joined efforts in other countries where Qualcomm faces probes from antitrust authorities. Qualcomm has countersued Apple for the royalties.  Several islands are still recovering from the one-two punch delivered by hurricanes Irma and Maria, which razed buildings, cut out communications and killed dozens of people. It's still too early to know the full extent of the damage, said Justin Ram, the director of economics for the Caribbean Development Bank.  According to Ram, even a 1% drop in visitors could mean the region loses out on about $138 million those tourists would have otherwise spent. In the long term, that could mean a $214 million hit to the region's GDP. "That's just from a 1% drop," he said.  There is some reason to be optimistic, said Hugh Riley, the secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Presently the largest hard disk drive (HDD) that stores data on spinning disks can hold about 14TB of information. Western Digital said the bigger drives were made possible by finding a way to use microwaves to write data on 3.5in drives. The first bigger-capacity drives should go on sale in 2019. While solid state drives are popular with home users, many large companies and web firms fill data centres with disks that depend on moving parts because, at high capacities, they are much cheaper and last longer. The drives store data on disks or platters that spin at high speed. A disk with a data capacity of 40 terabytes would be able to hold more than 2,500 two-hour movies encoded at a standard resolution.
