World power 'threatened' by Chinese AI

Image
Photo credits: Getty Images In July, China announced its national plan for AI , calling for the country to catch up with the US. But one expert said the accusations could be "sabre-rattling". "China is no longer in a position of technological inferiority relative to the United States but rather has become a true peer that may have the capability to overtake the United States in AI," said the report, from the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a research arm of the US intelligence community. "China's People's Liberation Army is also investing in a range of AI-related projects and PLA research institutes are partnering with the Chinese defence industry," the report said, citing publicly available documents. Report author Elsa Kania said some PLA thinkers anticipate the approach of a "singularity" on the battlefield, where humans can no longer keep pace with the speed of machine-led decisions during combat. Indonesian Officials Shuts Airport as Volcano Spew into the Atmosphere

Massive plumes of dark ash were seen reaching as high as 3km (2 miles) above the summit of the rumbling volcano, which began erupting last week. Officials raised the alert to the highest level on Monday, fearing an imminent major eruption. Up to 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the vicinity. Volcanic ash can damage aeroplane engines or even cause them to fail, and also clogs fuel and cooling systems. Pilot visibility can also be hampered. According to a spokesman for Indonesia's national disaster agency, said that the ash was being drawn southwest - towards Bali's main airport - by a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean. Ethical Hackers aims to Boost NHS Cyber-Defences

Image
Photo credits: PA According to BBC , the NHS is spending £20m to set up a security operations centre that will oversee the health service's digital defences. It will employ "ethical hackers" to look for weaknesses in health computer networks, not just react to breaches. Such hackers use the same tactics seen in cyber-attacks to help organisations spot weak points. One-third of UK health trusts were hit by the WannaCry worm in May , which demanded cash to unlock infected PCs. According to the head of the data security centre at NHS Digital, Dan Taylor, the centre would create and run a "near-real-time monitoring and alerting service that covers the whole health and care system". The UK's National Audit Office said NHS trusts had been caught out by the WannaCry worm because they had failed to follow recommended cyber-security policies in October.

Hawaiian Airlines Tracks Climate Change From the Sky

Image
Photo credits: Westend61/Getty Images Hawaiian Airlines has added equipment to one of its airplanes to collect real-time data on air quality as it flies. According to the carrier , technicians installed the equipment on the Airbus A330 earlier this year, and Hawaiian Airlines activated it this week to begin collecting data in the Pacific, Asia and North America. The project is in partnership with the European-funded, Belgian non-profit In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS). The device will gather information aimed at determining the health of Earth's atmosphere, such as the level of greenhouse gases at high altitudes. Earth's changing climate is expected to affect the way we fly in the years to come, with a range of consequences, from increased turbulence to more flight cancelations. A recent study published in the journal Climactic Change  used modeling to demonstrate how extreme high temperatures could cause major disruptions across the U.S. by the

Facebook Partners with Airbus Aimed at Bringing Wi-Fi Across the World

Earlier this year, Facebook introduced Aquila , its project to bring internet access to remote parts of the world via drone. On Sunday, the social network company announced that it was partnering with Airbus “to advance spectrum and aviation policy and continue to demonstrate the viability of HAPS [high altitude platform station] systems for providing broadband connectivity.” Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook earlier this year when Aquila premieres, “it will be a fleet of solar-powered planes that will beam internet connectivity across the world,” . The fleet will be comprised of unmanned aircraft, capable of flying for months at a time. While Airbus may seem like an unlikely partnership for increasing global connectivity, bare in mind that the company does more than just build

Symantec notifies of AI-enabled Cyber Crimes

According to Security software specialist , Symantec, expects artificial intelligence-enabled cyber attacks to cause an explosion of network penetrations, personal data thefts, and an epidemic-level spread of intelligent computer viruses in the coming years, leading to a full-fledged arms race between cyber criminals and security.   Senior Director at Symantec research labs, Brian Witten, said: “We think attackers are leveraging automation in building their attacks for a long time. In that sense, it is only a matter of time they start leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) a lot more aggressively. It will be their AI against our AI and whoever builds the smartest AI will end up winning the arms race.”   Many cyber security firms are using recent advances in AI and machine learning (ML), to secure systems and data of their clients as attacks get more complex and sophisticated causing unprecedented levels of disruption. Ghana connects to Nigeria’s Internet Exchange point

Driverless Cars Set to Hit UK Roads by 2021

Volvo and Uber struck a deal for 24,000 self-drive cars

Image

The agreement anticipates that the pick-up service will  purchase the vehicles over the course of three years beginning in 2019. Uber  began testing prototypes made by the carmaker last year in the US. One expert said the announcement "makes a good headline" but had doubts that fully autonomous, driverless Uber rides would be ready to begin until some years later. Uber and Volvo have not disclosed financial terms, but have confirmed that the deal is "non-exclusive" - meaning both are free to form similar partnerships with others. Chinese company Geely bought Volvo from Ford in 2010. Assuming Uber buys all 24,000 XC90 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) outlined in the agreement, the deal could be worth $1.4bn (£1.1bn), according to an estimate by the Financial Times. However, under their pre-existing agreement, Uber already uses various customised Volvo vehicles -

CBN, NCC seek transparency in 9Mobile bidding process

It was learnt that the CBN is particularly concerned about how Barclays chose the final round of bidders, as more qualified and interested bidders were not shortlisted. The two regulators had received petitions from bidders and stakeholders questioning the transparency of Barclays bank. CBN and NCC  stated in the letter that they had made it clear from the beginning that the bidding process for 9mobile must be “transparent and fair, with the financial and technical capabilities of the final bidders without question.” The regulators therefore have rea

Twitter is amending its policy on “verified” accounts, reserving the right to remove the blue badges from users who violate the online platform’s terms of service. The move came a week after Twitter launched a review of its policy following disclosures that neo-Nazi and white supremacist leaders had received verification of their accounts. The blue verification badge was created by Twitter to vouch for the authenticity of content from political leaders, celebrities and journalists, and to distinguish it from spoof or parody accounts. But in its announcement Wednesday, Twitter said its process until now failed to take into account whether users promoted violence or hate speech or otherwise violated its terms of service. “We’re working on a new authentication and verification program.
