Alcohol helps speak foreign languages better, according to a new study

Image
A study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology exploring the “popular belief that alcohol improves the ability to speak in a foreign language” found that booze has a positive impact on people’s grasp of foreign pronunciation. Researchers used 50 native German speakers who recently learned Dutch, providing some with a “low dose of alcohol” matched to their weight and others with an alcohol-free control drink. Each then took part in a casual two-minute discussion in Dutch with observers who rated their language skills. The participants were also asked to rate their own linguistics. The scientists found that those who had consumed alcohol were handed “significantly” better ratings from the observers compared with those who did not. “However, alcohol has no effect on self-ratings,” the report found. The evidence showed that despite pronunciation improving, grammar, vocabulary and argumentation were similar between both groups. The researchers, who came from the University of Li

Apple engineer 'fired' over iPhone X leak

Apple has reportedly fired one of its engineers after his daughter posted a video of the iPhone X before the official launch. The YouTube video was shot on the Apple campus in September when the young woman met her father for lunch. The video was widely shared after being spotted by tech news sites and blogs that watch Apple. She said her father was fired for breaking Apple's strict policy that bans filming on its campus. Apple has not yet confirmed that the man has been fired nor responded to a request for comment. News of the firing emerged when Brooke Peterson posted a follow-up video explaining why the original, in which she was seen trying out the iPhone X, was no longer available. Ms Peterson said Apple had asked for the "innocent" video to be taken down and said that its posting had led to her father being fired. Although Ms Peterson removed the video from her YouTube pages it has been widely copied online. The video shows Ms Peterson trying out the iPhone X wh

However, some telecommunication companies questioned the committee’s legal right to direct them to a third party in the name of consultant after investigations had been concluded. Some also expressed reservations on why the reconciliation of tax figures should be conducted by a private firm outside the National Assembly complex. Hon Ahmed Abu, chairman of the committee in a later dated 5th October 2017 directed the telecommunications companies to reconcile figures quoted in the committee’s report with consultants at a location within Abuja on or before Friday 20th

There is a need for a paradigm shift to effectively implement the desired change. The 2012 Gender in Nigeria Report published by the British Council reveals that gender inequality not only exists in Nigeria, but at high levels. Warning! Wi-Fi connections have been hacked

Image
The security protocol currently used to protect the vast majority of Wi-Fi connections has just been broken – meaning that hackers who are within physical range of someone’s home can crack anyone’s Wi-Fi password, spy on their Internet activity and intercept any unencrypted data streams. This is due to a severe flaw in WPA2 protocol, and the proof-of-concept exploit is called KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attacks). It allows hackers to eavesdrop on any Wi-Fi traffic passing between computers and access points. The US-CERT has recently distributed an advisory to about 100 organizations, warning that the discovered weakness can allow an attacker to decrypt network traffic from a WPA2-enabled device and hijack connections. Depending on the network configuration, it is also possible hackers could inject and manipulate data. The attack works by exploiting a four-way handshake used to establish a key for traffic encryption. During the third step of the process, the supposedly unique key can

Nigeria aimed to increase mobile broadband by 2020

Image
Nigeria says it is committed to increasing the current coverage of the active mobile broadband subscription per 100 from 20.95 percent to 50 percent by 2020. Mr Bolaji Akinremi, Minister Plenipotentiary, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, stated this while delivering Nigeria’s statement on ‘Information and Communications Technologies for Development’ at the UN General Assembly’s debate in New York. Active mobile broadband subscription is the number of subscriptions to mobile cellular networks with access to data communications – like the Internet – at broadband downstream speeds of 256 kilobit per second. Nigeria’s mobile broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants increased from 1.0 inhabitant in 2012 to 11.7 inhabitants in 2016. Akinremi said Nigeria recognised the direct impact of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) on the wellbeing of Nigerians. “The Government of Nigeria recognises the reality that Information and Communications Technologies has a direct i

How to make Catfish pepper soup

Investor jitters dragged on London’s blue chip index, which slid 0.86 per cent or 63.89 points to 7,323.98. David Madden, a market analyst at CMC Markets, said: “The tragic event in Barcelona yesterday has shook tourist-related stocks. “When events like this happen, traders wonder will there be a negative impact on tourism, and companies in the travel and leisure sector feel the pressure.” British Airways owner IAG was among the worst-performing stocks, down 12.5p to 611.5p while travel agency TUI dropped 9p to 1,325p and low-cost carrier easyJet fell 11p to 1,290p. The tragedy also impacted the share price of InterContinental FHotels Group, which fell 64p to 3,924p. Trees disrupt West Yorkshire train services

Image
Rail passengers in West Yorkshire are continuing to experience disruption to services after Storm Ophelia battered the region. Obstructions on railway lines in West Yorkshire are affecting Grand Central and Northern services in the county. Fallen trees and a landslip at Hipperholme mean the lines are currently blocked between Halifax and Bradford Interchange. Grand Central services to and from Bradford Interchange are not calling at Low Moor, Halifax, Brighouse, Mirfield or Wakefield Kirkgate. Northern are also experiencing disruption to their services between York and Blackpool North and between Leeds/Selby and Manchester Victoria/Huddersfield via Bradford Interchange. The disruption to services is expected to continue until around 5pm. York-Blackpool North services will run between York and Bradford Interchange and between Blackburn and Blackpool North only.

Twitter aimed tougher action against abuse

Image
GETTY IMAGES Twitter is planning to impose new restrictions on pornographic and hateful imagery as part of a renewed effort to tackle abuse on its social network. The US company has also said it intends to review user complaints more quickly. The efforts are outlined in a leaked email from the company's head of safety, which was published by Wired. But one UK charity has already said the company needs to go further than "tinkering" with its existing rules. Twitter's CEO, Jack Dorsey, had said on Friday that he planned to announce a "more aggressive stance" against online abuse this week, after Twitter was criticised for temporarily blocking the account of Rose McGowan - an actress who had accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of rape. Harvey Weinstein denies all allegations of non-consensual sex. The UK government had also recently urged social-media leaders to do more to tackle the problem, and suggested Twitter and others would have to pay a le

Google DeepMind: Al designed to master the Chinese game of Go

Image
Google's DeepMind says it has made another big advance in artificial intelligence by getting a machine to master the Chinese game of Go without help from human players. The AlphaGo program, devised by the tech giant's AI division, has already beaten two of the world's best players. It had started by learning from thousands of games played by humans. But the new AlphaGo Zero began with a blank Go board and no data apart from the rules, and then played itself. Within 72 hours it was good enough to beat the original program by 100 games to zero. DeepMind's chief executive, Demis Hassabis, said the system could now have more general applications in scientific research. "We're quite excited because we think this is now good enough to make some real progress on some real problems even though we're obviously a long way from full AI," he told the BBC and other journalists. The London-based artificial intelligence company's software defeated leading Sou

YouTube star attacks video site's leaders

Image
One of YouTube's most influential vloggers has attacked the service's leaders, claiming they are failing many of their most popular video creators. Specifically, Casey Neistat criticised the way the platform had made it impossible for some videos to generate advertising revenue, without clearly explaining the rules to its community. One of his own videos - an interview with Indonesia's president - was temporarily "demonetised" last week. YouTube has said it is listening. "We watched Casey's video and appreciate him and the wider community voicing their concerns," a spokeswoman told the BBC. "We know this has been a difficult few months, and we're working hard to improve our systems. We're making progress, but we know there is a lot more to do." Mr Neistat has more than eight million subscribers on YouTube, who have signed up to be alerted when he posts. He has also struck a multi-million-dollar deal to create content for CNN on

AI used to detect breast cancer

Image
Photo credits: GETTY IMAGES US scientists are using artificial intelligence to predict whether breast lesions identified from a biopsy will turn out to cancerous. The machine learning system has been tested on 335 high-risk lesions, and correctly diagnosed 97% as malignant. It reduced the number of unnecessary surgeries by more than 30%, the scientists said. One breast cancer specialist said that the research was "useful". The machine learning system was trained on information about such lesions, the system looks for patterns among a range of data points, such as demographics, family history, biopsies and pathology reports. "Because diagnostic tools are so inexact, there is an understandable tendency for doctors to over-screen for breast cancer," said Regina Barzilay, MIT's Delta Electronics Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a breast cancer survivor herself. "When there's this much uncertainty in data, machine learning
